
Project Overview:
Howard Middle School is an historic school in the Old Fourth Ward. The scope of work included the rehabilitation of the existing 122,000 square foot building and gymnasium. The project also included a 95,000 square foot addition to the original footprint. The new construction added new administration space based on historic drawings, a new auditorium, classrooms, and media center as well as kitchen, dining, and support spaces.
Structural Narrative:
The new structural systems are steel framed with composite at elevated floors, and bar joists at the roof. Braced frames for lateral resisting system used everywhere except the media center base where cantilever columns were used. Aggregate piers were used at the multi-story new construction.
